Dr Mark J Kum is a Specialist Orthodontist.
Mark is a Kiwi born Chinese. After living in Auckland, Mark has a deep appreciation for the peacefulness (especially after each aftershock) and beauty of Christchurch and the South Island.
Mark obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Otago in 1993 and worked in Auckland’s North Shore as a general dentist for 7 years. The experience of treating patients with a range of dental procedures from extractions to veneers, implants, crown and bridge work and root canals gives Mark a better understanding of how a smile can be perfected. Having worn braces himself as a teenager, Mark understands the benefits of orthodontic treatment.
He returned to Dunedin to complete his Masters in Orthodontics in 2003. The sun and surf of Wollongong (1½ hours south of Sydney), Australia attracted him and his wife. Mark enjoyed his time working as one of 5 orthodontists at “Your Smile Team” based in Shell Harbour, Wollongong and Bowral for 3 years. The modern facilities enabled Mark to keep up with the latest orthodontic technology.
After the birth of their daughter, Mark and his wife made the decision to return to family and friends in Christchurch in 2007. He worked alongside Paul Crowther at Merivale Orthodontics and in Timaru for 3 years. Mark is a consultant at the Dental Department, Christchurch Hospital on Fridays.
He is a registered specialist with the New Zealand Dental Council, and is a member of the New Zealand Dental Association, New Zealand Association of Orthodontists, and the Australian Society of Orthodontists. Mark regularly attends conferences keeping him up to date with the latest developments in orthodontics.
