Dr Janice Sommerville is a specialist in orthodontics. She received her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago and spent a year as a dental house surgeon in Auckland prior to working as a general dentist in London for several years. Dr. Sommerville’s interest in orthodontics led her to study for a M.S. in Orthodontics at the University of Illinois, Chicago, one of the most highly regarded orthodontic specialty programs in the United States. Following graduation, she opted to remain in Chicago and completed the examinations to practise as a dentist, and subsequently as an orthodontist, in Illinois.
For the next few years, Dr. Sommerville combined a career of teaching orthodontics at the University of Illinois with private orthodontic practice in downtown Chicago. While working there, Dr. Sommerville had the opportunity to treat a diverse range of patients, many of whom were adults. The complex problems which they presented with resulted in an interest in the interdisciplinary treatment of adults, whose cases ranged from complete cosmetic restorations to minor tooth movement.
Dr Sommerville returned to New Zealand and set up an orthodontic practice in Remuera, Auckland. Her goals of establishing a world-class orthodontic service with a highly trained team in a purpose-built quality environment have been achieved and maintained. The bonus of working alongside three other excellent dental specialists at 5 St. Marks has made her ability to provide well-rounded care more accessible.
